We were in the generalisation phase, working as historians on a project about migration and settlement to the local community. It was just days before the schools research conference and the heat was intense. We were all becoming something new. As I walked through the library, I could see Nik sitting cross-legged on the floor outside her classroom with David. He was redrafting his presentation for the showcase. I was too far away to hear what they were saying, but it was absolutely clear from their body language - David on his knees, hunched over his exercise book, and Nik alongside him, really there - that they were both engaged in something meaningful; something that mattered deeply to them both.

I left them undisturbed.
